While starting with little to no experience in any industry can be daunting, it can give you a competitive advantage. When Jim Cameron started his company in 1982, he was competing against contractors who had been in business since the 1920s. Cameron was willing to try new things which ultimately allowed his company to grow.
Today the contractor’s work is 70% public works projects, 20% place and finish, and 10% polishing and decorative work. Cameron saw his lack of experience in polished concrete and place-and-finish as an opportunity. In 2012 Cameron-Reilly purchased Meidling Concrete Inc., a place-and-finish company with a large polishing division.
“We feel we are on the cutting edge of slurry disposal now for this division,” says Cameron. “Same thing on the place-and-finish side. We reached out to suppliers and experts and today we have new equipment and methods that have dramatically improved our numbers on that type of work.”
The contractor is relying on the next generation of workers to step up and replace the aging construction workforce. He’ll need the workers, since Cameron expects a steady uptick in work between the recent passage of a federal transportation bill and a big boom in school construction.
